Elections & by-elections

The first nomination period for the EGSS bi-elections is will be opening March 26th. Joining EGSS is your chance to make real improvements to student life in the Faculty of Education (and it’s a great way to meet new people!) Click on the link below for more information on vacant positions, campaigning instructions, and important deadlines.

All positions are open and you are welcome to nominate yourself to any position individually or in a pair!

  • President
  • VP Academic
  • VP Finance
  • VP Student Life
  • VP Communications
  • VP Diversity and Equity
  • Conference Chair
  • KPE representative
  • MATL representative
  • FNIE representative
  • EdUS representative
  • 3 AGSEM representatives (Association of Graduate Students Employed at McGill) reps, 1 for each department
  • 4 PGSS counsellors (Post-graduate Students’ Society)

Deadline to submit the completed form (available on the website and attached) for the first nomination period is Tuesday, April 3rd at 5pm.

A second round of nominations will be open from April 4th – April 9th for all those positions that don’t receive nominations in the first period.

 All nominees are expected to attend the Spring General Assembly on April 12th from 4pm-6pm. Exceptions will only be made on an individual cases for extenuating circumstances.

Voting will take place from April 16th – April 18th

Want to learn more about EGSS? Unsure if you want to hold a council position? Email us anytime at egss@mail.mcgill.ca with your questions. We would be pleased to let you know the low down about the different positions and tell you about our experiences. We always welcome new faces and ideas!

Concerned about the time commitment? One Council position can be jointly held by two or more EGSS members. Candidates should fill out one nomination form with both names. Both members’ names will appear as a single choice on the ballot of an elected position.

The following is a brief (incomplete) summary of each position. To read a complete description of the duties and responsibilities of each council position, please read our constitution.

VP Finance

  • Ensure all financial transactions adhere to the approved EGSS’s budget
  • Maintain official financial records
  • Oversee all fundraising activities

VP Communications

  • Maintaining up to date website content
  • Check the EGSS e-mail account at least once a day during school days
  • Prepare and deliver EGSS communications to members via the
    listserv, website and social media

VP Student-Life

  • Plan and execute all social, cultural, and other activities for members of
    the EGSS
  • Promote student involvement

PGSS Councillors (x3)

  • Represent the Membership at PGSS Council
  • Attend Council meetings and report on important PGSS

Departmental and Program Representatives (DISE, MATL, FNIE)

  • Attend Council meetings and provide updates on departmental
  • Mobilize students to participate in the political life of EGSS
  • Promote EGSS events in their departments

Association of Graduate Students Employed at McGill Delegates (x3)

  • Attend Council meetings to report on important AGSEM matters

Election and By-election Timeline 2017-2018

  1. The first nomination period will be open from Tuesday, September 19th, 2017 until Tuesday, September 26th, 2017 at 4:00pm
  2. The second nomination period will be open from Wednesday, September 27th, 2017 until Saturday, September 30th, 2017 at 4:00pm
  3. The election is schedule to take place from Tuesday, October 3rd to Friday, October 6th

Nomination Instructions

Please submit the completed form (see nomination-form) by email to egss@mail.mcgill.ca. The subject line should be as follows: LAST NAME, FIRST NAME- EGSS POSITION TITLE.

We recommend that you read our constitution before starting the nomination process. You can find the English and the French versions here.

Below is the campaign information you need to know:

  • All campaigning shall be terminated on October 2nd, 2017, the day prior to the first day of the voting period.
  • Posters size shall not exceed 28cm by 43cm and no more than 25 posters per candidate may be posted at one time.
  • The current EGSS Council has set campaign spending limit at $50 per candidate. Please submit your receipts to the EGSS Office in a clearly labeled envelope by October 2nd, 2017.
